DEVELOPING MEDICAL IMAGING INFORMATICS

With the growth of the field and diversity of our research, the group was renamed in 2002 to UCLA MII. This change also reflected the beginning of our graduate program in imaging informatics. We focused on development of methods for image standardization and understanding, as well as the integration of imaging to drive clinical knowledge and disease management.

ADVANCING BIOMEDICAL & IMAGING INFORMATICS

MII's faculty and students' work in this period spans beyond imaging to the broader area of biomedical informatics. Our research efforts involved imaging and imaging-related information; radiogenomics; structured reporting and statistical NLP methods; and the development of machine learning (ML) and other statistical methods for predictive modeling.

MAKING HEALTHCARE BETTER FOR EVERYONE

Today's MII embraces the challenges of digital health and artificial intelligence methods in medicine, examining the breadth of methodological, translational, and sociotechnical issues that arise when developing, and applying new computational approaches in healthcare. We tackle problems faced by real-world health systems, advancing new ideas and approaches to improve biomedical research and healthcare for everyone.

BEGINNINGS

Founded in 1985 as a research group in the UCLA Department of Radiological Sciences.

FUNDING

Continuously funded by the NIH since 1985, MII faculty have served as PIs for more than $40M in extramural direct costs in the past decade alone.

FACULTY & STAFF

Today, MII has seven faculty and staff including programmers, data scientists, project managers, and research administrators to support biomedical informatics and data science research.

STUDENTS

Currently 23 PhD and MD/PhD students through Medical Informatics, Bioengineering, Computer Science, and many other UCLA graduate programs.
