Biography

Dr. Bui received his PhD in Computer Science in 2000, after which he joined the faculty in the Medical Imaging Informatics (MII) Group in the Department of Radiological Sciences. His research focuses on distributed information systems for healthcare and biomedical research; data and probabilistic modeling methods for different diseases; and biomedical data visualization. His earlier research in electronic health records (EHRs) resulted in early methods for integrating clinical databases, and helped form concepts in open source EHR models; and his work on the TimeLine system for problem-centric visualization of patient records continues to influence a number of present biomedical informatics projects in this area. Today, his research primarily focuses on the development of databases and probabilistic models from observational clinical and research data, and the underlying challenges of translating such models into clinical usage. He PIs several NIH R01s, funded by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In 2002, he led the development of UCLA's first NIH-funded medical informatics training program, with a focus on the growing role of imaging. He became Director of this training program in 2006. In addition, Dr. Bui is a Program Director for a new BD2K T32 at the intersection of clinical informatics, bioinformatics, and big data science. In 2012, Dr. Bui became the Director of the MII Group. Dr. Bui also serves as Director of a newly funded NIH U54, the Los Angeles PRISMS Center, focusing on the development of an informatics platform for mHealth in pediatric asthma. He is also a Co-Director of the NIH BD2K Coordination Center, providing support and oversight for the national Big Data to Knowledge initiative and NIH's emergent data science efforts.
